Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Its really kind of hard to chose as there are so many great songs!

If you get the time, make sure to check these out! Many have been given video overdubs of images that make the songs content even better!

Trying to get me to do all the work huh! :)

That's what I did. Went up to a website that listed hundreds of songs and then went through the list manually one by one, looking to see if there were YouTube versions.

I like how the 300 list does different artist renditions!

Even though the above list isn't anywhere near as big as these, it took over 4 hours of work to pick them out, as in some cases there were all kinds of duplicates.

I'm definately gonna take a break from adding more myselff for awhile...

Songs often arouse emotions, and emotions often move people to take action, for better or worse.  Thanks for the list!

The peace song I recall most fondly is on your list:  John Lennon's "Give Peace a Chance."  I think when Lennon heard a huge crowd of antiwar demontrators singing it in the United States in opposition to the Vietnam war, he supposedly considered it a highlight of his life.  Presumably, he didn't try to charge them royalties!  By the way, do you happen to know what the copyright policy is on videos on YouTube and various other sites?  Personally, I typically avoid viewing them due to uncertainty on whether viewing them is a violation.

Note, that it is more than just a list, as each title above is linked to a Youtbe video.

James, I don't know what the status is. I imagine that there will be some fireworks at some point, however. Are you concerned that you might be violating the company's economic interests? Note that in most cases the quality of the video isn't that high. Having heard some of the stories about how big record companies wrecked a lot of artist's lives, especially back in the 60's and 70's, I am into the idea of reorganizing how musicians produce and distribute their content. Way back when, only the companies could afford to have their own recording studio, now most mucisians have their own, and can link them together online to produce live content or work coopeartively on pieces yet still be half way across the planet.

Give Peace a Chance is on the list, and the video with the song was awesome, which included footage of them at rallies! I'd never seen most of the footage!!!

Energynet,

Due to YouTube and other technological advances, methods of transmitting music (and videos) to consumers are certainly advancing.  We are currently in a transition period where the legal ramifications are being sorted out.  In the meantime I personally try to err on the side of caution.

Sarah, the problem is there are very few from the last decade.  And the ones there are, you probably have never heard.

Some artists mention peace or anti-war sentiments in a song...such as John Mayer, Waiting for the World to Change, but the song itself is not about only about war or peace.  Same with Dixie Chicks, Melissa Etheridge, etc.

Interestingly, I found this article from 2 years ago that talks about current anti-war songs, but again, usually the song only contains a reference/line...or, the artists are obscure...

The last 8 years have been fairly heavily censored by the media.  Take a look at all the flack the Dixie Chicks got for doing a song or two and standing up the monster at a time when anyone that dared raise a voice of opposition was treated like dirt.  Career breaker anyone?

Again, if you have any songs  you that are on Youtube you know of post them!  This is good way to create a scrapbook of songs!

Note, if you are a member of Youtube, their Playlist option allows you to create a special category for any group of songs like the above, and save them as a group.

You are welcome!  I did something similar some time back based on a collection of muscians I put together on MySpace.  But the inspiration came from a Newsvine article about war and resources by Benno.  I think it was John who posted Abraham, Martin and John, one of my favorites.  Which gave me bright idea to go google anti-war songs, the first link at the top had hundred's of them alphabetized.  I started going down the list and was amazed to find that many of my oldtime favorites were also on Youtube!  So why not just start posting them one by one, as comments...

Something like one or two folks saw them, so I figured it would be worth reposting them as a separate aricle.  It took 4 plus hours to put together, but what a wonderful four hours of work!!!  Putting the list together has been a very wonderful time, and I'm still going back to the list and playing various songs.

I couldn't believe the version of "not gonna study war no more"  If you are into gospel, talk about a awesome!

If you want to add a link to a video in your comments, here's how to do it.

    1. Find the video you want linked.

    2. highlight and copy the url from youtube (top or on right side of youtube)

    3. hit the reply button and then type in the author and title

    4. Highlight the author and title with your mouse.

    5. click the link icon on the tool editor (5 icon from the left) note that the link icon will only light up once you have highlighted a few words you wish to use as the link point. If you pass your mouse slowly over each of the editor tools, a little box will open up and tell you what each tool does.

    6. The Insert/edit box will open up. right click your mouse and use the paste option to copy the url.  Then click on the insert button. That will embed the url into the words you highlighted.

    You Welcome...

I'd seen several hysterical claims that the peace symbol was satanic. CND actually got a story on the symbol done by the BBC (not the only coverage in the UK, mind you but none happened here in the US for some reason).

I have always interpreted the hysteria as a product of the McCarthy era, when the symbol was linked with communism. The marketing hype that was run in that era was astronomical. I think its effects can still be sensed in some pockets of the US.

    Your right!

Dang... I tried to find a copy of the old Greenpeace logo, but it seems to have nearly disappeared from existance.  Here's a poor redone version.

The group was originally organized to blockade an attempted nuclear weapons test off of Alaska in the late 1960's.  It's anti-nuclear position in the U.S. has almost completely disappeared, unlike Europe.  The organization here in the US barely acknowledges its roots in the peace movement today.

That song tears me up too, ron.

Super list, energynet. Some of these songs are new to me so I'm checking them out. I knew "Peace Train" had to be included -- glad to see that on in particular. I think I'd add "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye:

    "Mother, mother
There's too many of you crying
    Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today - Ya

    Father, father
    We don't need to escalate
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today

    Picket lines and picket signs
    Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
    Oh, what's going on
    What's going on
    Ya, what's going on
    Ah, what's going on

    In the mean time
    Right on, baby
    Right on
    Right on

Father, father, everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply because our hair is long
Oh, you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
    Oh

    Picket lines and picket signs
    Don't punish me with brutality
    Talk to me
    So you can see
    What's going on
    Ya, what's going on
    Tell me what's going on
I'll tell you what's going on - Uh
    Right on baby
    Right on baby"

    Metalica: One

What a find!  As a vet during Vietnam, just days before I went into the military (draft number was 100) I saw the movie Johnny Got His Gun.  Metalica used many images from this movie in the this 1988 music video!

Not exactly a feel good pic for a deployment!  Gee wilikers that must have been awful; it was horrible just as one staying home and knowing the guys coming back couldn't or wouldn't talk about Nam.  It should be required reading in every high school, but then launching war would be so much tougher with the price attached.

    Hi Pamela!

It was indeed an intense movie for a 19 year old kid.  I was lucky to have been promised and got computer tech status with homeporting in Hawaii.  One year in Asia near the war zone changed me.  Most come out of their experience hardened. I came away disgusted.

Seeing other cultures up close with all of their warts, including spending months in Taiwan's dictatorship was very eye opening.

Joan Baez and Mimi Farina: Bread and Roses

Joan and Mimi are sisters.  This is an especially amazing find!  Mimi created an organization that annually did a festival at the UC Berkeley Greek Theater called the Bread and Roses festival.  I volunteered at the 1980 Bread and Roses festival and got to meet Joan Baez, Jonie Mitchell and Leonard Cohen and Neil Young in an after event party, all of whom performed that year.  Neil's performance brought down the house.  But Lenoard's material was very haunting, while Mitchell was clearly suffering during that time.

Mimi passed away a few years ago from breast cancer.

Here's a few more from just one David Rovics. Hard hitting, and the last one is not for faint hearts. But they pack a powerful punch for anti-war.

Thanks for adding some of David's work here Raat!

There was another recent SOA event in Georgia.  The Jenin piece is excellent.  Last year Charlie Rose let Israel's foreign minister on his show get away with the claim that the country had been hit by 19,000 terrorist attacks in 2007.  Hmm... 18,995 of them were probably kids throwing rocks at tanks and armoured vehicles. I've got an Israeli friend who is in Peace Now.

I was actually trying to find just the track by David titled 'Occupation' that was used at the end of a 6-part documentary called The Iron Wall  - what this link is to. The track starts at just before 6:00.

    Yes, Jenin is particularly good.
